How to extend the service life of a high-pressure hose

A high-pressure hose is a key wear part in professional water jetting work, and its service life depends heavily on how it is handled every day. With correct use and storage, a hose can often last for many years, while avoidable strain can shorten its usable life much sooner. Here is what matters in practice and why small habits make a big difference.

The main risks are mechanical stress, sharp bending, pulling, crushing and exposure to unsuitable conditions. Kinks during operation, dragging the hose over edges or driving over it can all damage the outer layer and weaken the hose structure. The same applies to frequent force on fittings, excessive load changes at the gun and use outside the permitted operating limits. For professional operators, the goal is not only safety, but also consistent performance and fewer interruptions in daily work.

Tips to protect your high-pressure hose from excessive wear:

  • Make sure that no kinks are formed during operation.
  • Never pull on the hose.
  • Do not bend the hose and do not drag it over sharp edges.
  • Do not drive over the hose with machines or vehicles.
  • Open and close the gun as little as possible. Every change in load counts.
  • Avoid ambient temperatures below -10°C and above 70°C.
  • Do not expose the hose to substances such as chemicals, solvents or detergents that could damage it.
  • Stay within permitted operating limits and differentiate between permissible operating pressure and test pressure.
  • Never use force to tighten hose fittings.
  • Protect loose hose assemblies on roadways and walkways to prevent abrasion, crushing or other damage.

Temperature and chemical exposure also play an important role. A hose should not be used or stored in conditions that are too cold or too hot, and it should not come into contact with substances that may attack the material. It is equally important to distinguish between operating pressure and test pressure, because the hose must always be used within its intended limits. Careful handling during installation, operation and transport helps protect the hose and reduces unnecessary wear.

Storage is just as important as use. Keep hoses in a cool, dry and dust-free place, away from direct sunlight and UV radiation. Seal the ends with protective caps so dirt and moisture do not enter the hose, and store it lying down with little tension and without kinks. This helps preserve the hose from the inside as well as the outside and supports a longer, more reliable service life in demanding professional environments.
